Zamfara: Police, supporters clash over arrest of APC chieftain.
Police in Zamfara State and supporters of the All Progressives Congress have engaged in a battle over an attempt to arrest a chieftain of the party, Alhaji Sani Gwamna Mayanci, immediately after he held a meeting with the supporters in his office on Saturday.

The policemen, who stormed Mayanci’s office with the aim of arresting him, were stopped by his supporters who swore not to allow their leader to be ‘arrested by Government House police.’

The supporters, who were mostly youths, barricaded the gate and set tyres ablaze to stop the police. The police shot in the air to disperse the teeming crowd but the youths refused to give up the fight.

When the police realised that the angry youths were not moved by gunshots, they entered their vehicles and left the venue.

Speaking shortly to newsmen, Alhaji Sani said, “I have already told the governor that I will not allow Government House police to arrest me.”

Sani stated that he was not above the law and was ready to surrender to security men only if they could produce the arrest warrant to him.

“I am ready to surrender myself to the security, but let them come with the arrest warrant,” he said.

He maintained that the APC supporters were law-abiding citizens and were always ready to comply with the rules and regulations of the state provided that there was justice and fair play.

He also reaffirmed that the APC supporters would not stop coming together for a meeting if there was anything to discuss, no matter the intimidation and harassment from the government.

He called on party supporters to remain law-abiding and avoid anything that could lead to the breach of security in the state.

Meanwhile, an APC zonal vice chairman, Alhaji Sani Gwamna, has called on Governor Bello Matawalle to stop making unnecessary comments against former Governor Abdul Aziz Yari.
Addressing the APC supporters in Gusau on Saturday, Sani said it was unbecoming of a state governor to be making unnecessary comments against the his predecessor particularly on security issues.
